Top 5 - Scary Songs

That's a fine carving job

Yes, my hiatuses (hiati?) seem to grow longer with each attempt to re-insert myself into the daily KGB blog. This is due to the insane amount of time and effort it takes to find a job in the world of academia. I know I have a PhD, but this is really way too complicated. And, I'm only half way done. Fortunately, the next half comes a few months down the road, so I have a few spare minutes to post another long awaited TOP 5! So, I got some help and stole this idea:

TOP 5 Scary/Halloween Songs

Yessir, your 5 favorite songs that have to do with something scary (anything you want, really) or Halloween. If any one puts Michael Jackson's Thriller for all five of their songs (Cori) I'll be severely disappointed. So, have at it, there are some good one's out there.

OK Aren! Here are my top 5 in no particular order. I wouldn't have used Thriller anyways, so I resent that comment!

1. Theme song from the Addams family.

2. Dude looks like a lady- Aerosmith. There's always a lot of these on Halloween!

3. Witchy woman- The Eagles.

4. Devil with a blue dress on- Mitch Ryder... just because that's what I was for Halloween last year!

5. Hells Bells- AC/DC.

Unfortunately, I couldn't find a way to make a Bon Jovi song fit this top 5 theme. Maybe next time.

I am very sad that I couldn't use Thriller, but here are my top 5 (without Thriller)...

1. Ghostbusters - Ray Parker, Jr.

2. Every Breath you Take- Police

3. Monster Mash- Bobby "Boris" Pickett

4. Devil Went Down to Georgia- Charlie Daniels Band

5. Theme from Bewitched

First time poster, short time lurker. Great site. Here are my 5, in no particular order:

1) Don't Worry, Be Happy--Bobby McFarrin: this song used to scare the crap out of me when I was a kid and it was new on the radio. Listen to it in the dark if you don't believe.

2) Timothy--The Buoys: Are you kidding me? This song is insane.

3) The Curse of Millhaven--Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds: Freaky deaky. He sounds like a nut job in this song (as if that really narrows it down, I know)

4) Mr. Death--Unknown: Some computer game I played years and years ago featured a song to which this could have been the title. The repeating line is "I can't take a breath / Without seeing Mr. Death," and one line goes, "I can't take a bath / Mr. Death is washing my back." If you've heard this song, you know how GD scary it is.

5) Jesus Take the Wheel--Carrie Underwood: This song scares the shit out of me when I consider that half of the roads in the South are probably now populated by people holding their hands in the air, hoping Jesus will take the literal wheel.

FYI, I found the song...it's by Fat Man, a group who (predictably) does music for games. I found their site if you want to hear the weirdest song ever: http://www.fatman.com/listen.htm

OK, here goes. In no particular order:

1. Tam Lin- Fairport Convention

2. This Is Halloween- from The Nightmare Before Christmas

3. Werewolves of London- Warren Zevon

4. Goodnight Moon- Shivaree

5. The Cockroach That Ate Cincinatti- ?

Great posts so far everybody. Themes from TV shows are a bit suspect, but I do like stalker songs (Every Breath..). Thanks for the post Adam - interesting choice of songs, especially the Fat Man track. This is a freaky one - I don't want the devil washing my back, if you know what I mean. And Anon. - excellent choice with the Zevon track. That was one of my top picks!

And, with out further delay, before too many good songs are posted:

1. Concrete Blonde - Bloodletting (the Vampire Song): An easy choice by title alone. I posted this track a while back. Its a pretty sweet song and all about Vampires.

2. Grateful Dead - Friend of the Devil: "Friend of the devil is a friend of mine"

3. Pearl Jam - Bugs: Off the Vitalogy disc, this is one freaky song about creapy, crawly, nasty little bugs and Eddie does the voice inflection perfectly.

4. Smashing Pumpkins - Bullet With Butterfly Wings: What does one do on Halloween if not smash pumpkins? Besides, this song is a bit scary with the "world is a vampire" and "despite all my rage" bits.

5. Widespread Panic - Me and the Devil Blues: My replacement for Werewolves of London - written by Robert Johnson, but JBs voice is great for this song.

That is probably the most awesome carving job ever!

Ok...hmmm...

1. Donovan - Season of the Witch

2. Radiohead - Climbing Up The Walls...creepy creepy creepy

3.Bonnie Tyler - Total Eclipse of the Heart...for no reason whatsoever, this song has creeped me out since I was a kid.

4.Toadies - Possum Kingdom

5. Nerf Herder - Buffy the Vampire Slayer Theme (not really scary I guess, but I couldn't come up w/ a 5th one...plus vampire slaying...ooooo)

Kristen, you get get mad props for the Buffy mention. Somehow we should be able to work "Hush" into this list.

Let's begin by making wishes come true...

1. "Suite from 'Hush': Silent Night/First Kiss/Enter the Gentlemen/Schism," from "Buffy the Vampire Slayer: 'Once More, With Feeling'"

2. "Ruination Day, pt. 2," Gillian Welch

3. "Dies Irae," from "Requiem," Mozart

4. "O Death," from "O Brother, Where Art Thou?"

And something so scary I can't even listen to it...

5. "Voices of Old People," Simon & Garfunkel

(or if that doesn't count, "Imperial March" from "Star Wars")

Ryan Adams -- Halloweenhead :: Duh.

TV ON The Radio -- Wolf Like Me :: Ya know, like a werewolf.

Centro-Matic -- 74 Cuts, 74 Scars :: Yowza, sounds painful.

The Silver Jews -- Transylvania Blues :: Sometimes even Dracula gets the blues.

The Avett Brothers -- Die Die Die :: The most non-morbid sounding song dealing with a morbid subject that you'll ever hear.

I ain't got 5. Songs don't scare me much - but "Shitlist" from the Natural Born Killers soundtrack comes close.

In no particular order:

1) "Names" - Cat Power

2) "Amy in the White Coat" - Bright Eyes. Like "Names", above, a chilling song about child abuse.

3) "Tainted Love" - Coil. This inspired cover of Soft Cell's hit came out in 1984, when AIDS was still barely understood and basically an untreatable, swift, and very painful death sentence.

4) "Don't Fear the Reaper" - His Infernal Majesty (H.I.M.). The Norwegian goth rockers scored a double with this one -- best cover of the classic Blue Oyster Cult hit, and best H.I.M. track ever (caveat: I have not heard all "Reaper" covers or all H.I.M. tracks -- but I have heard a lot of both!).

5) "Comfortably Numb" - Pink Floyd. Contains not one but two brilliant David Gilmour guitar solos -- the first one bliss, the second agony.

BTW, the song "Shitlist" from Natural Born Killers, mentioned earlier in this thread, is by the band L7, from their great 1992 album "Bricks Are Heavy".

Creepy songs are the ones that make the hair on my back stand up and shiver. Here are my top 5.

1) "The Jezebel Spirit" - Brian Eno and David Byrne. One of the freakiest songs I have ever heard.

2) "Shankill Butchers" - The Decemberist. "The shankill butchers want to catch you away."

3) " '97 Bonnie and Clyde" - Tori Amos. Yeah, I like the original too but Tori Amos's version is creepier.

4) "A Good Idea" - Sugar. Whose idea was it?

5) "Avi Satani" - Jerry Goldsmith. From "The Omen." When you hear it you know it.

1st time poster, pleasantly stumbled upon the site.

Alot of great songs listed here. Aren, I think I like your 5 best - a couple there I wouldn't have thought of, but now downloading for MY Halloween party.

So here's mine, on a theme:

1. "Number of the Beast" Iron Maiden - the spoken part out of Revelations at the beginning of this one gives it a creepy start.

2. "Shout at the Devil" Motley Crue - read the lyrics, nuff said.

3. "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" Black Sabbath - the word Sabbath is just spooky to me, then add "bloody" and yeah...

4. "Dolly Dagger" Jimi Hendrix - about a blood drinking witch. Of course its Hendrix, so might just be a drug reference.

5. "Psychobilly Freakout" Reverend Horton Heat - discovered this song on Guitar Hero, and it scares me in more than one way.
