Greatest. Idea. Ever.

Prepare yourselves.....
Radiohead has an album coming out October 10. That's the tenth of October, 2007 in the year of our Lord.

9 days from now.

A Radiohead album.

Its called In Rainbows, and the band is releasing the album available for digital download at their website next Wednesday. I haven't even listed the best part yet.....the price for said album is, WHATEVER YOU WANT!!!!

Yes, label-less Radiohead have decided to make the mp3's of their first album since 2003 available for download on their website at a price of whatever you want to pay. Seriously. $1. $0.50 $100.00. Whatever. They're making a special edition available for purchase which contains a cd of non-album tracks, lyrics booklets, vinyls, etc. for $80 and the CD form will come out early next year. But you can get the album next Wednesday for any amount of money you see fit.

Wow.

Here is the tracklisting, as dictated to pitchfork.com...

1. 15 Step
2. Bodysnatchers
3. Nude
4. Weird Fishes/Arpeggi
5. All I Need
6. Faust ARP
7. Reckoner
8. House of Cards
9. Jigsaw Falling Into Place
10. Videotape

So, if there was ever any doubt about Radiohead being the absolute coolest band in the entire world....this here should settle it.

Holy Crap.

Bob, come on now, what would you call a better idea?

This is sweet though -- when was Radiohead's last release? Seems like it has been a while.

I'm thinking it was 2003.

And I agree with you Kendall....this idea is right up there with democracy and the wheel.

The ancient Greek philosophers would be proud.

Yeah, Radiohead and fire. One might call it a fire sale (dear lord, it burns, amaaaaazzing graaaace....and, scene). Actually though, its a pretty sweet idea. I gotta give Radiohead props for trying something like this out - just as a social experiment. Plenty of less popular bands put their shit out there for free everyday though. Radiohead is asking you pay something for it, right? It'll be really interesting to see what the average price is and how many people buy it.

So, how much would you pay for this or any other album? Does it depend on how good the band is? What is the criteria? Popularity? Any thoughts?

Yeah, I think what's cool about it is that if they wanted to, they could charge $50 for the CD and people would still probably buy it, strictly because they're Radiohead.

Not saying they're right, but it would happen.

I liken this to the unofficial leak of a CD like used to occur regularly back in the day because of Napster, and still does to a great extent.

They kept this album completely hidden from the world, to the point that NO ONE had any idea they were making one, or were even close to making one.

So, rather than put this album out on a label, and have it leak to the public thereby getting nothing for it, they're essentially leaking it themselves, but just asking people to donate, so at least they get something out of it.

Then the actual CD will come out in Jan. or Feb.

I do like the idea, and wish other "major" bands would be a little fan friendly every now and then.

By the way, I paid $7.00 for it.

I paid $5.00 then there was like 1.90 of credit card charges. I've overpaid for every album in the past ($18.99 for a cd is ridiculous) so maybe I underpaid for this one....but so be it.
