Top 5 Roadtrip Songs/Albums

I have arrived. A long and arduous journey, it was. It was 32.5 hours in a car with nothing but gas, bathroom, and drive through stops. What keeps a man sane in that kind of deprivation-chamber environment? Music, my friends, music. A sole source of inspiration on the Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California highways. So, what do you listen to? What are your Top 5 road trip songs? I still live in the age of CDs, so I'm so inclined to include Top 5 albums as well. So, lets lay it on that steaming pavement.

You'll find my Top 5 in the comments, but here's a taste of one of them:

Caste Iron Filter - Americana Motel

1. Caste Iron Filter - Americana Motel: Absolutely fantastic imagery of Tennessee and North Carolina interstate. When I made my drives east to Duke I would dig on this song and this album.

2. Widespread Panic - Going Out West: I listened to this song everytime I visited the great western range, so I had to listen to it this time as well.

3. Dispatch - The General: Any driving song has to be singable, in my mind. This is a good one to belt out.

4. Throw Down - I've got this self-made mix of kick ass classic rock and country songs that is a hit with many Hanoverians. Its a great one for the road.

5. Pure Funk - One of those cheesy collections you can buy mail order. Bottom line - its funk and it sets a nice rhythm for driving.

There they are. Hope I didn't miss anything.

Glad to hear you made it, sir. So, in honor of you making it successfully out to Cali, here's my top 5 road songs.

1. Lynyrd Skynyrd - Tuesday's Gone: In my mind, no songs better for gazing out the car window whilst succesfully navigating the highways of America, or for parties at the moontower. To be honest, every single one of my songs could easily be classic rock songs. As a matter of fact.....

2. The Kinks - Lola: This is probably going to just become a list of my favorite Classic Rock songs. I highly recommend checking out Weird Al Yankovic's version of this song called "Yoda".

3. Johnny Cash - Folsom Prison Blues: One of my favorite songs to sing as load as a can. I like to think I have a decent, deep, Johnny Cash-like singing voice when I try to sing this song, but I think all I do is piss off my wife by trying....

4. Janis Joplin - Me and Bobby McGee: Most people I know either LOVE or HATE Janis. I like to fancy myself somewhere in the middle.

5. You know what...fuck it. I'm throwing out ANYTHING by Creedence. There....its done. I'm a sucker for John Fogerty. You know that CCR actually hail from California?!?!? I was surprised/devasted when I heard this. Doesn't matter now, though. I love their southern rock sound despite how unauthentic it may be.

PS Gerdon, for us non-Hanoverians give us a mini rundown on the tracklist for Throw Down if ya don't mind.

That Cast Iron Filter song is indeed a good one..I was thinking that the other day. I just got around to watching The Last Waltz so I'm on a big The Band kick. Those guys wrote some great driving songs and because of this, I am excluding them from my list (along with the Grateful Dead). On a long drive like the one you just made, I really like to stretch out:

1. Allman Brothers Band - Jessica:: Even before I knew ABB, I heard this song in Field of Dreams as Ray drives into Boston hence its association with the road.

2. Widespread Panic - Pilgrims:: I figured Driving Song was a little too obvious, this one is perhaps a little more subtle. Love the signature Houser rift in this -- reminds me of driving across Kansas surrounded by plains and darkness save the stars above.

3. Pink Floyd - Shine on You Crazy Diamond (Parts I-V):: Drove through downtown Cincinnati once on the way back to Hanover with this song cranked up. Seeing the city lights with Gilmour's guitar work in the background equated to one of my all time favorite music moments to this day.

4. Neil Young - Cowgirl In The Sand:: I think a trend is arising here. I obviously love me some drawn out, heavy rocking guitar solos when I am on a long drive.

5. My Morning Jacket - One Big Holiday:: Trend holds true here with the rocking solo to start this song.

I can vouch for that Throwdown CD; it is good!

Let's not forget "America" by Simon & Garfunkel - another classic road trip song. Also, I'll get that Throw Down setlist and post it for all to admire!

1. Neil Young - Albuquerque: When I looked at Gerdon's map this one jumped out at me. I love the peddle and the harmonica on this one. I think the subject in this tune is seeking out the solitude of the open road.

2. Bob Dylan - Billy 1: Bobby gives Neil a run for his money on the old harp. Or maybe its the other way around. Anyway hope none of our journey's end up like the Kid's, although I'd say he had it coming.

I thought this would be a good spot for a CCR song, but that has been covered. Nice call on that one.
So instead I'll go with...

3. Paul Simon - Duncan: From the Live Rhymin' album. Road trip New England style. Could have also gone to Africa with "Under African Skies." Lots of good Paul Simon songs.

4. The Band - When I Paint My Masterpiece: I won't be excluding The Band from my list. Dylan wrote this one, but he's already on the list. Plus the Band's version ain't too shabby. When you guys go to Italy I hope you're seein' double on a cold, dark night on the Spanish Stairs. Try to avoid that bumpy plane ride to Brussells though.

5. Led Zeppelin - Going to California: Love the mandolin work on this track. I hear this song is about Joni Mitchell.

Left a lot of good tunes off this list. Lets see that Throw Down setlist.

Well even though i just ran across this page, i thought i would throw my 2 cents in.

i also think that my taste is a little bit more modern than you guys but that's ok.

99 red balloons- Goldfinger

Fever for the Flava - Hot action Cop

Lowrider- War (ok, so a little less modern than i thought)

Escape(the Pina Colada Song) - Rupert Holmes.

most of them don't really have to do with the road like you guys, but they are still amazing to dance to in the car.

plus you get a girl's opinion.

have fun.
