Top 5 - Happy VD

I hate to break it to you, but it’s February and Valentine’s Day is less than a week away. Call it a Hallmark Holiday, call it expensive. The fact is, this time of year most guys (and some girls) have to face those sometimes uncomfortable “feelings” and make some sort of a gesture. I don’t see why it’s so hard – so many songwriters have already laid the ground work for us. So, if you’re not quite sure how to say what you really want to say, let me tell you, there’s always a mix tape - a compilation of those heart-felt melodies that set the mood. The ladies love it.

So, here we go. What are your Top 5 mix tape songs, love songs, songs to set the mood, songs with which to woo? Maybe it’s cheesy, but everybody has their favorite love songs. As a sign of a good faith effort, I’ll even make the first post. Also, be forewarned that any list containing Marvin Gaye is gonna get docked 5 points for being way too obvious.

Finally, just to get you into the right frame of mind, check out this Guy Forsythe tune:

Guy Forsythe - Whatever

He really digs deep on this one.

Wow, there are lot of good love songs out there - its hard to narrow it down to just 5, but here they are. You'll notice no Marvin Gaye nor Barry White nor Engelbert Humperdinck. Some nice, soft, laid back songs. Norah Jones is the jazziest of the bunch. I also have to give props to INXS - Never Tear Us Apart. Our Norwegian/Australian friends danced to this song at their wedding and it turned out really well. Check it out:

In no particular order:

1. Ben Folds Five - The Luckiest, weird old-people analogy, but good song.

2. Dispatch - Outloud, "I'd come running"

3. James Taylor - You Can Close Your Eyes, sweet simple song.

4. Ben Harper - Forever, this song was actually played on KGB by guest Jeremy Bruner back in the Hanover days.

5. Norah Jones - Turn Me On, put away with the formalaties and just say it.

VD eh? Are you sure you're not subconsciously more interested in your favorite veneral disease songs? Oh wait, I guess not. I reckon I don't need to worry about incorporating The Meat Department's "Eye Herpes" into the list.

This was tough to come up with but here are some of my favorites. We'll forgive Gerdon for stealing Ben Harper's Forever from my list - it probably would've been at the top.

In no particular order (Warning: Excessive sap below):

1. Stevie Wonder - As: Gerdon didn't mention getting docked for Stevie. Long lament about how good love can make a man feel. Also nice and funky!

2. Bright Eyes - First Day of My Life: Describes how love can fuckstart your life unexpectedly.

3. Vienna Teng - Harbor: Will probably play this at my wedding one day. Also, the voice - wow!

4. Jeff Buckley - Everybody Here Wants You: The late Buckley was a master and men everywhere owe him for helping them get laid since he crafted this song.

5. Zero 7 - Destiny: The name kind of indicates what this is about.

Ok, back to whiskey and brawling!

I have had a list since the from Cinci to Indy, but it is in SB, so I will post my list when I get home! And I'll tell you now, Mr. Kendall... it will be great; and will not "need any work" as my running songs supposedly did... :)

1. "You Give Love a Bad Name" Bon Jovi

2. "Love stinks" J. Geils Band

3. "Don't Go Away Mad (Just Go Away)" Motley Crue

4. "Total Eclipse of the Heart" Bonnie Tyler

5. "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" The Righteous Brothers

Thanks for bringing up this horrible holiday, bastard!

"Used to Love Her" Guns 'n' Roses

I always do what Rose says, so here are my songs in no particular order.

1. Travis - Flowers in the Window
2. The Beatles - I Will
3. Queen - You're My Best Friend
4. Moulin Rouge Sndtrk - Come What May (basically comes out of the Love Song Cliche Handbook, but I can't help it...totally love it)
5. Coldplay - Yellow

Top 5 love songs, eh? I get teary eyed just thinking of the idea. Hopefully I can hold myself together to come up with my list of cheesy....errrrr, love songs.

1. Jack Johnson - Better Together: Suppose I should put the song Alex and I danced to at the ol' wedding.

2. Chris Isaak - Wicked Game: If the world were in black and white, this song would be playing in the background every time I try to make out with a girl (i.e. my wife) on an empty beach.

3. Dave Matthews Band - Crash: Listen dude, nothing woos an unsuspecting girl more than breaking out the acoustic guitar and serenading her with some Crash, brah.

4. Goo Goo Dolls - Iris: Remember that part at the end of City of Angels where Meg Ryan's character was killed by that truck not soon after Nicolas Cage's character had decided to leave angel-dom (heaven??) and become a human because he had fallen in love with her???? That was awesome....and tear-jerkingly sad.

5. Mazzy Star - Fade Into You: They didn't put out enough albums. This song kinda sums up Mazzy Star....its mesmerizing.

I like Top 5s.

I figured this was coming, so I've been working on my list for a while. Here it is.

1)How Can I Tell You - Cat Stevens: You might regonize this song from a TV commercial about diamonds sung by the beautiful Cat Power. However you are doing yourself an injustice if you have not listened to renowned terrorist Yusaf Islam's original version.

2)Harvest Moon - Neil Young: One of Neil's career highlights in my opinion. About the same time he was crowned the father of grunge. Nothing grunge about this one.

3)Pulling Touch - Poi Dog Pondering: A beautiful peice from their live Liquid White Light Album. Also check out "Diamonds and Buttermilk", what I believe to be a tribute to the female body.

4)Fumbling Towards Ecstasty - Sarah McLachlan: a great emotional song about overcoming the fears that some, if not all, experience with love. Just my take. Either way a great song.

5)This Must Be The Place(Naive Melody) - Talking Heads: Five is really cutting it short. I saved it for the greatest love song ever. Again just my opinion. I really couldn't do this song justice, neither could David Burn. A reference to E.M. Forrester's A Room With a View should say it all. WARNING: Do Not Listen to the watered down, String Cheese Incident version.

6)Our Way to Fall - Yo La Tengo: Like I said 5 was cutting it short so here is #6. This is a perfect song all around. I love the Tengo and this is one of their finest.

First of all, I get bonus points from Aren for recruiting Cori and Kristen to the blog! :)

And here are my songs...

1. Alanis - Head Over Feet - Best love song, perhaps best song, ever. I know every word, and props to poor Kristen who had to suffer through hearing this song literally everyday on the way to high school.

2. Israel Kamakawiwo'ole - Somewhere Over the Rainbow (It was on a wonderful mix cd from someone I love and just a really sweet song... aww, mix tapes)

3. Counting Crows - Anna Begins - "And everytime she sneezes, I believe it's love"... come on, that's love! Also a good cover of this song by the Pitchforks.

4. Ice Cream - Sarah McLachlin - "Your love is better than ice cream"

5. Maroon 5 - She Will be Loved - "I don't mind spending everyday out on your corner in the pouring rain"

Honorable mention: Old 97s - Question - "Once in your life, baby tonight, I've got a question for you"

Alright, comment #10! Rose, good job recruiting. I think the army could use your skills of persuasion. Now the list:

tilly and the wall - love song
I love male/female duos

bloodhound gang - bad touch
This number popped up on the ole Karma on my way back from Oxford. Good job, "shuffle".

sarah mclachlan - i love you
My first two choices from her are already posted so I have to go with the obvious.

mirah - lonestar
Any woman who says, "how about some of that there lubrication for this motor's getting ready for some fornication" is ok in my book.

elbow - buttons and zips
English people apparently think "zippers" is too long of a word.

Good references to Sarah McLachlan, Norah, and Mazzy Star.

Wow, you guys know your love songs. And nice descriptions too - you should be in charge of the blog. Cori, why are all those hate songs from the 80's? Did you have some romance go sour in the decade of monsta-ballads?

Yeah, I believe that Cori had her heart broken pretty badly between birth and the age of eight! :)

First let me congratulate Cori on choosing the best love song ever, “Total Eclipse of the Heart” – in my experience (and all evidence to the contrary), a man’s love song.

That leaves me with:

1. Frank Sinatra, “The Way You Look Tonight” – you outlawed Marvin, but not Frankie. There can be no love without Frankie.

2. Iron & Wine, “Naked As We Came” – love, life, death. That’s everything.

3. Paul Simon, “Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes” – expectations are irrelevant: love makes her look like a million bucks (whoever she is), and makes you feel like it.

4. Altan, “Ten Thousand Miles” – love’s been around for a long time, even in Scotland. And sometimes it’s sad - not to mention long-distance.

5. Barenaked Ladies, “Be My Yoko Ono” – love is ridiculous. Embrace it.

Honorable Mention: Counting Crows, “Colorblind” – A guy told me (at a monastery in Minnesota, no less) that this is the ultimate make-out song. He then borrowed the cd and went to his room to be alone. Not sure how that worked out for him. But I’m not here to promote autoeroticism (however appealing it may be in the face of VD, taken either way).
