I Bite My Thumb!

(*gasp* - did he just bite his thumb?). Yes, ladies and gentlemen, I bite my thumb in the general direction of Mr. Bryan Kendall. That can only mean one thing - a challenge. Bryan, marginally to his credit, has provided you fine folks with his Top 5 songs on a given day. While this is admirable, I don't think my cohort will disagree that the true spirit of a Top 5, in the parlience of High Fidelity, revolves around a well-defined duel. The Top 5 must have a topic. I, therefore, propose to keep Mr. Kendall on his proverbial pedals by periodically peppering him with Top 5 topics for his response at his leisure. I'll be happy to subsequently submit my reply and encourage all of our following friends to do the same. Just leave a comment with your Top 5 songs.

So, what will the topic be for January? In High Fidelity, many of the Top 5s seem to revolve around some emotion. While I think that's appropriate, as songs certainly connect with our emotions, we'll take it a little easy this month. January is the month of football, beginning preparations for spring marathons, and we've recently seen the release of Rocky. So, how about:

Top 5 Running/Working Out/Achiever Songs

That's the challenge Bryan (and our viewing audience). The clock is ticking.

Bite me Gerdon -- I accept your challenge. Fortunately for everyone, you won't find any Eye of the Tiger on my playlist. I like to mix it up with fast and slow numbers that help me to fluctuate the pace as I run. Here are my Top 5 workout songs:

1. The Band - King Harvest (Will Surely Come) :: Loads of imagery that makes me want to be outside and on the trail.

2. The Allman Brothers Band - Stormy Monday :: Fantastic guitar solos from Duane and Dickey have kept this on my running playlist since its inception.

3. Drive-By Truckers - Sinkhole :: Short, intense, angry = gets you pumped.

4. Uncle Tupelo - We've Been Had :: Awesome song with a strong, fist-pumping rift combined with a slowed down bridge that keeps you from maxing out too early.

5. Counting Crows - Angel of the Silences :: From Recovering the Satellites, my favorite Crows' album, I doubt this rocker is what most people associate with the Counting Crows. Too bad for them!

I'll accept your Top 5 - some predictable, some not. I fail to see how The Band can get you pumped up to kick some ass or the pavement. Somehow I think DBT would be morally opposed to exercise. I can't argue with ABB or Counting Crows though. I'm not afraid to go a little more mainstream in my kick ass/running/achiever Top 5.

1. Bob Marley - Natty Dread: "Gotta get to 5th street"

2. Rage Against the Machine - Wake (Matrix Soundtrack) : Imagery from the movie.

3. John Lee Hooker - Boom, Boom : "Let that boy boogie, it in him, and it gotta come out, I felt so good"

4. Beastie Boys - No Sleep Til Brooklyn : no resting til its over

5. Concrete Blond - Still In Hollywood : still kicking ass

Gotta give props to anything AC/DC and Bon Jovi "Livin On a Prayer" (we're half way there!) - a favorite of my buddy Kyle's.

King Harvest is my favorite The Band song. The live version from Rock of Ages is sweet sweetness! In addition to the great imagery, the guitar licks are awesome. Combined, it gets me pumped to run outside.

I see you no one else has taken you up on your offer of Top 5 songs....well, what the hey, I'm bored so I'll try to offer a different perspective. Here goes:

1. Weezer - Undone (The Sweater Song): Perfect beat for my running pace. Excellent starter.

2. A Perfect Circle - The Outsider: Everyone's favorite "Get away from me and go commit suicide somewhere else" song that reminds us "Hmm, maybe running isn't so bad."

3. Blur - Coffee and TV: Running is all about pace. So why not have songs that help develop that pace.

4. Hives - Hate to Say I Told You So: The only song I probably liked more the very first time I heard it was Smells Like Teen Spirit. The simple, distorted, quick guitar hook is amazing and perfect for sprints or any other activity that extras a ridiculous amount of unnecessary energy.

5. Pixies – Where is My Mind: Other than the “falling building” imagery I get for some unexplainable reason, this song has the ability to block out everything, and make you forget what your doing.

That’s all I go guys. I just noticed that no one else has posted anything, so I figured I’d give it a try. Holla

Gorbi appreciates the contribution, Rutledge. Soon, thousands, will be enthralled in our musical banter. Consider yourself the first.

So I have been accused of being a bad girlfriend for not commenting on the ol' KGB site yet, so here goes... My top five running songs:

1. Steve Miller Band - Joker (for warming up)

2. Shaggy - It Wasn't Me (excellent beat and easy to follow lyrics)

3. Tom Petty - Free Fallin' (makes you feel carefree and loose)

4. Stranglers - Golden Brown (good for pretending I am in that transitional scene in a movie, where I am thinking deeply about something and it comes to me at the end of the run... hasn't helped with solving problems, but is still pretty darn fun)

5. Outkast - Miss Jackson (another rap song, but they have the best beat for keeping me running!)

Guess its about time I contributed. It seems as though Gerdon needs a little guidance...props to Bon Jovi?? Anyway if I were to go on a run right about now here's five songs I'd be listening to.

1. Gang Starr - Above the Clouds: sick beat, smooth rhymes, calling out of the wannabe MCs. What more could you ask for? This one makes me want to move regardless of what I'm doing.

2. Bob Marley - Punky Reggae Party: Bob embraces the punk movement and this is the result. The best of both worlds. This one always gets me pumped.

3. Queen - Good Company: No We Are the Champions on this one. This is Queen's finest. A good song for any time.

4. Ry Cooder - Crow Black Chicken: Slide guitar, horns, and chicken pie. This one always makes me feel good.

5. Van Morrison - Not Supposed to Break Down: One of many favorites from the Belfast Cowboy. Fits the theme nicely. Good for many situations/moods, in this case pushing yourself to the limit.

Look at all these contributions. Great success! The next Top 5 challenge will come out in February with episode 2 of the webcast.

Rutledge,

Thanks for the contribution. Great description of the Perfect Circle song!

Rose,

We need to work on you!

Straight out of my 'running tunes' folder:

(1) As a personal rule of thumb, you can't go wrong with a little Beck at the onset. The song inevitably varies according to the type of run I am getting ready for. A mid-week short intense run will likely start with either Devil’s Haircut or New Pollution (I especially like this one when my run starts two feet away form a busy road), but a weekend long run should start with Nobody’s Fault but my Own – slow things down from the start, and slide into a nice smooth tempo for a long run ahead.

(2) Nirvana – Smell’s Like Teen Spirit: just a great drum beat I can get my footsteps in lock with to climb a hill or pick up the pace when the mileage starts to kick in.

(3) Blink 182 - Reckless Abandon: what else is there to say, just ‘use this song to lead you on.’

(4) Jay Z – Dirt off your shoulder: Holla back Rutledge! I aint afraid to thug it up, and the lyrics of this song are great at making me forget about any pain in my legs.

(5) Saves the Day – At your Funeral: This song will become the anthem of… your run. I always end up picking up pace when this song is playing, must be something to do with the slow start followed by the fast paced beat for the rest of the song. It’s a crowd pleaser, give it a listen the next time you hit the pavement.

Honorable Mention, just outside the top five, have to go to Blur – Song 2 and Everclear – Volvo driving soccer moms.

because i'm such a follower of trends...i figure better late than never to throw my 10 cents (or is it 2 cents) in:

1. Yeah Yeah Yeahs- Y control--it's soooo good! anyone who can't get down with this jam is really out of their gorde.

2. Radiohead- 2+2=5--
it's a builder. starts off slow and just freakin pumps you up!!

3. Bob Dylan- Lily, Rosemary, and the Jack of Hearts--
it's probably one of the LONGEST dylan songs; i find it's really nice for the middle of the run; when things just start getting monotonous

4. Elliot Smith- A Question Mark
you've got to give credit where credit is due, the man can write and produce an engaging song. this is one of his more fast pace songs (really highlights his talent, i think)

5. Beck- Summer Girl
it's cute. it's trendy, and yes--i love it!

Again...I always do what Rose says.

1. Prodigy - Smack My Bitch Up : makes you all determined to kick that run's ass.

2. Bjork - Army of Me: I don't want any crap about liking Bjork. This is a good song, it's helpful in setting a good pace and makes you determined to get it done.

3. Radiohead - Myxomatosis: good guitar in this song

4. The White Stripes - Hypnotize, uptempo again...blah blah blah

5. I'm gonna steal Beck - Devil's Haircut from above cause it's a good one and there is no use in me trying to think of a better one cause I can't right now.

Also any hip hop or rap song that isn't maddeningly repetitive.
