Let's make a mix

Dear readers,

We appreciate all of you fine people stopping by and getting a good laugh everyday as we rattle on about our favorite musics at the current time. It's been an enjoyable first few months blogging away and we've grown a little over that time and that's cool. Thanks for stopping by and we hope you've found some good music.

After reading a great article over at NPR concerning the magic of the mix tape (Read the article here, written by Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth fame), I got to thinking.

What are the people that stop by KGB v2.0 listening to? The three of us post almost daily about the music consuming us. How about all of you out there?

So, I thought it might be cool to try and make a mix CD of KGB readers, visitors, nomads, whatever. If you've got a good song, post about it in the comments. Doesn't matter what it is and no explanation is needed, just let us know about it. In the end, once (and if) we get enough for an 80 minute disc, I'll compile the tunes, make copies, and distribute to anyone interested via mail or yousendit, whatever. It'll be interesting to see what we come up with as a group.

Unfortunately, this is not 'Nam, there are rules here. First, look at previous posts and DO NOT post a song by a band that's already been posted. It's bad form to include more than one song by a band on a mix.




Well, there isn't a literal connection [with me being in this blog entry], Dude.

Second, there are no more rules. If you want, try to make the music flow as best you think it can. Remember the guiding words of Rob Gordon (not to be confused with GordonR, or is it?) from High Fidelity:

"The making of a great compilation tape, like breaking up, is hard to do and takes ages longer than it might seem. You gotta kick off with a killer, to grab attention. Then you got to take it up a notch, but you don't wanna blow your wad, so then you got to cool it off a notch. There are a lot of rules."

For this initial version, we'll go without a theme. Consider this a personal mix of your favorite songs from your fellow music fans from around the world. Since I am perpetuating the idea, I'll get us started with a little power pop that I think fits the bill well as a killer that grabs some attention. Let's see what we can come up with. Anyone brave enough to post a song that'll "take it up a notch"?

Saturday Six Pack III

This week's Six Pack is really a Mint Julip in honor of the 133rd running of The Kentucky Derby. The first weekend in May has always been a sort of unofficial holiday for me, many times with heavy doses of Maker's Mark thrown in for good measure. However, today I had to break with tradition and not drink at all because I idiotically signed up to run a marathon tomorrow. Songs about Kentucky, soul/motivation/drive, and thoughts of home make up this week's selections.

Lucero -- Poor Heartache from The Coldwater Sessions
I find lots of great music via the many great blogs out there. This one comes from Captain's Dead and features a large collection of demos/unreleased tunes from Lucero's self titled album. I love the old timey music feel to this one.

The second track from this album for a second consecutive week. I bet you can guess which album has been getting a lot of play around here.

Loretta Lynn -- Family Tree from Van Lear Rose
Loretta is a Kentucky gem. With all of my reflection for home in the last week, it was natural to listen to her. She got lots of help from Jack White on this album, a dude discussed here lately.

My Morning Jacket -- Evelyn Is Not Real from Tennessee Fire
Kentucky's finest as they like to call themselves. The nick name is appropriate and I can certainly say they're the most redeeming thing about Louisville.

Saturday Six Pack II

Good evening folks. I was hoping to simply cut and paste last week's 6 pack entry, since the Cardinals and Cubs were supposed to be on TV here. Unfortunately, we got stuck with the Yankees and Red Sox. I'm sick of hearing about these teams. It seems all ESPN talked about this past week was Boston-New York and Brady Quinn. Anyway, enough of my complaining, let's get to the good stuff.

This week I had a hankerin' for rock and roll songs. All of these bad boys have some killer riffs that'll get you headbanging like these two guys

Dinosaur Jr's new record hits stores this Tuesday and it smokes! I have not stopped listening to it for the last month. Let It Ride, dating back to 1988, gives a little taste of the band that might have created the best album of 2007 when it's all said and done.

Lucero -- San Francisco from Rebels, Rogues and Sworn Brothers
Two Cow Garage's new CD brought me back to these guys and their great album from 2006. Songs of lost loves....refreshing.

The Hold Steady -- The Swish from Almost Killed Me
By now, all 3 of you know my love for their 2006 album Boys and Girls In America. However, this song, dating from 2004's Almost Killed Me, might be their hardest rocking of all.
